For many years, Norma Ortiz operated her Dominican bakery out of her home on the Lower East Side. A few years ago, Norma’s business began to outgrow its limited quarters. Norma found an empty storefront for rent on 3rd Street near Avenue C, but the space needed a complete renovation before Norma could re-locate her business. To fund the project, Norma turned to LES People’s FCU, where she has been a member since 1995. Norma found the credit union staff helpful and supportive, and was overjoyed to learn in early 2009 that she had been approved for a small business loan! After much hard work, Norma’s new storefront location – called “Rossy’s Bakery” after her daughter, Rosa – opened to the public on May 21st, 2010, and since then has done a brisk business. Running her own bakery has always been Norma’s dream, and she is grateful to the Lower East Side People’s Federal Credit Union for making her dream come true.
