LES PEOPLE’S Statement of Solidarity

On December 5, 2016, LES People’s Board of Directors approved the following statement, reaffirming our credit union’s commitment to our members and to the fight for economic and social justice.

The Board further resolved to donate all new member fees ($5 per member) in December to La Colmena, a community job center in Staten Island, in solidarity and support of its work with day laborers. We encourage all who are divesting from big banks to invest in LES People’s or another community development credit union in your area.

LES People’s Statement of Solidarity

LES People’s Federal Credit Union recognizes that many in our credit union community and, indeed, in our city feel threatened in the current political climate. We condemn rhetoric and proposals that seek to marginalize or instill fear in immigrant, Muslim, African American and other communities. Our credit union will continue to serve and steadfastly protect the privacy and rights of all of our members. Your accounts and your trust remain safe with us.

LES People’s stands also in solidarity with the water protectors in North Dakota, and we have signed an international letter urging 17 banks to halt their support for the Dakota Access Pipeline. As the world’s biggest banks continue to finance unjust and unsustainable projects, credit unions like ours offer a different model, by investing exclusively in our local communities and to improve our members’ lives.

LES People’s is a non-profit financial cooperative dedicated to promoting economic justice and opportunity in NYC neighborhoods. We provide high-quality financial services and have reinvested more than $100 million in housing, small business and personal loans in low income and immigrant communities.

We are proud that our credit union is democratically owned and directed by our members, who represent New Yorkers of every race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and country of origin. And we are grateful for our dedicated staff, volunteers and partners, who similarly reflect the diversity of New York City.

Our credit union is driven by a vision of thriving, sustainable, and diverse communities where all people live with dignity and are able to contribute fully to their communities and society. We are part of a broader cooperative movement committed to building a just economy and a world in which individuals share ownership and control over finance, their workplaces, housing and land.

We welcome all who share in this mission and vision to join us.
